Newseria: In a few years, cancer ointments or patches may appear on the market

Delivery of drugs through the skin not only help limit any negative effects they might have on the digestive system, it also make it possible to avoid the pain related to the  stinging sensation that happens whenever medication is administered intravenously or subcutaneously. Till now it was mostly strong painkillers and hormones that could be delivered to patients this way. Thanks to an innovative transdermal carrier developed by Polish researchers – that list is about to get a lot longer! As a matter of fact, it is going to include substances used in fighting diabetes as well as targeted oncology. The Wroclaw-based company behind this innovation – Biotts – plans to bring its first product to market in the next 5-7 years.

‘At this point the only medications being delivered transdermally are painkillers, a few drugs for neurodegenerative diseases and patches with hormones or nicotine’ – says Konrad Krajewski – ‘The carrier developed by Biotts makes it possible to deliver large drug particles through the skin – and that includes not only the ones that dissolve in fat, but also those which dissolve in water. Our carrier can temporarily soften the space between cells and provide a path to deliver drugs directly into the bloodstream or to diseased tissue” – he adds.
